Flash Photography Festival: Planet Iceland

For such a small country, Iceland is jam packed with a plethora of alien landscapes. Vast black beaches, ancient lava fields blanketed by thick green moss, underground natural hot springs and so much more. Around every corner there is scenery waiting to take your breath away. This place is truly a photographers paradise.

Talia and I wanted to experience this first hand, so in April we blasted off to the small nation. We lived in the back of a van for two weeks and drove over 4000 kilometers to take in all this country had to offer and to snap a few pictures along the way. It's hard to encapsulate such incredible scenery in a small series of photos. We did our best to capture its essence and hopefully, if you were thinking about going, our photos can be enough of a push to get you out there!

If you are interested in seeing some of our pictures from the trip and maybe hearing a story or two I invite you to come join us at our launch party for this years Flash Photographic Festival. Meet us at Rudy's Eat & Drink at 375 Graham Avenue anytime after 7pm. If you can't join us that night, you need not worry, you can see our photos there all month. More details can be found HERE.

I figured I would tease our event with a few of the images that will be shown at Rudy's. I'm super excited to see you there. Catch you at Rudy's on Friday! LETS BLAST OFF TO PLANET ICELAND!!!

A spacecraft (or maybe an airplane?) crash landed on the black sands of Sólheimasandur.

The atmosphere seems to be unstable here. It smells of poisonous sulfur.

A wild Bantha and its baby getting nourishment from their fodder... okay, maybe it's just an Icelandic goat, but what an amazing coat!

Special Delivery! New Business Cards.

Just received my new business cards in the mail. I've never had my own personal business cards before, so I'm pretty jazzed to get these. Here is what they look like!

This is a pretty uninteresting post, so here is a picture of my cat to hopefully make it worth your time.

IAN & ALLISON Wedding Shoot!

I shot my first wedding earlier in the month. I was a little nervous taking this on because not only was I going to be the photographer, but I was also a groomsman. This brought about a few challenges but fortunately for me, my girlfriend Talia joined me on the shoot. Talia was able to pick up all the shots I had to be in. This took a big weight off my shoulders. I couldn't imagine having to set up the shots on a tripod, setting a timer and running into the shot. I probably would have been a sweaty mess from all the running. That wouldn't have been an ideal situation. Crisis avoided!

Despite being a bit nervous the day went on smoothly and the pictures came out great. I've delivered the final product and I'm really excited that the bride and groom are happy with the photos. All and all this was a very positive experience and I'm looking forward to my next wedding shoot.

Here are some of my favourite shots from the wedding. Let me know what you think!

ALBUM COVER for BURN YOUR WORLD

I had a really cool opportunity to shoot an album cover for a Winnipeg band called Burn Your World. The photo was shot at Elmwood Cemetery here in Winnipeg for their album "A Burden, For All Your Days". This grave is said to be haunted by the ghost of a little boy named Joseph. If you go on the right night people say he comes out to play. I have done stories on local ghost hunters who have photos of mysterious smoke and orbs around this site. Whether it's a camera error or a real ghost is to be debated.

Ghost stories aside, I'm super stoked to get the opportunity to make this album cover for these guys. If you like hardcore music you should give them a listen. The link is below, along with the original photo and album cover. ENJOY! :)

SUMMER '16 (on FILM)

Summer has officially come and gone. It always feels like summer goes by way too fast here in the prairies. I'm happy to say that I feel made the best of this summer. I explored so much of Manitoba that I hadn't seen before. From Caddy Lake to Churchill, I saw more of the province than I'd ever thought I'd have the opportunity to.

I didn't get out with my DSLR as often as I did last summer. In some ways this was okay. Even though I love to shoot, it's sometimes really great to just live a moment and not have to worry about shooting it. For about a month this summer I carried around an old (expired) disposable Kodak camera instead of my cumbersome camera kit. It was a nice way to pack light and still capture moments from the summer. Very little thought required, just point and click.

I had this film developed and I'm happy with the results. Here is a selection of my favourite shots from this Kodak.
